Music
I present here a small selection of music because
I love discovering new bands and helping other people discover music
that's off the beaten track.
1. Orchestra
Baobab - Specialist in All Styles, from Senegal these guys have
been writing music for years - this was their first release after
a 15-year gap. They blend Afro-cuban sounds with traditional beber
style rhythms. The result is an African style Santana.
2. Orchestra
Baobab - Pirates Choice, adouble CD of a session recorded in
1982 which Billboard said "so much feel it drips from the speakers!".
Slightly more traditional than the previous album but still very
worthwhile.
3. Rokia
Traoré - Mouneissa, another amazing voice from Africa, amazing
vocal control and delicacy which blends phenomenally with the traditional
african instruments used as the backdrop. This artist will be appearing
at Arezzo Wave 2004
4. JS
Bach - Brandenberg Concertos, Bach is a great leveller.
5. B12-
Electro Soma, an album relseased in the early 90s, a modern
day reflective Vangelis sound.
6. Antonio Carlos Jobin - The composer of Desfinado
Plays, it doesn't come any more elevator music than this. Pure postmodern
strings and melodies that have been "elaborated" by songwriters
thorough the ages. [unfortunately this is a very rare LP]
7. David
Bowie - The best of Bowie, A CD from one of the UKs true pioneers.
8. Ali
Farka Toure with Ry Cooder - Talking Timbuktu, this grammy award
winner from the 90s is timeless pairing two great music legends
and bringing us one of the most memorable african blues collaborations
of all time.
